holding meaning in the thread.
Ever catch yourself staring at a pencil and wondering what secrets it’s hiding? Welcome to my brain—where every fallen orange leaf, random flyer on the kitchen table, or forgotten sweet in a coat jacket, sets off a burst of curiosity. If you’ve got a soft spot for the odd bits and pieces that end up in your junk drawer or scattered around your space, you’ll feel right at home here.
Do you ever think about the things you’re surrounded with? Not just in relation to people, but to the objects you own, use, ignore, or admire. I often wonder about their relevance—why they were created, who made them, what traces they carry, and what becomes of them when they’re discarded.
As a creator, I find myself drawn to the stories woven into handmade things. Each object—whether it’s a pencil pocketed by accident or a flyer handed to me on the street—carries a wonder that inspires me.
About a year ago, searching for a hobby and a way to connect with my mother, I began crocheting. With her guidance through those first stitches, I found a sense of curiosity familiar from other mediums. Crocheting filled the quiet spaces in my head—spaces that could have been claimed by distractions that aren’t always healthy.
Unlike my usual drawing, crochet required patience. I had to build my ideas row by row, working with only what was at hand—the specific shade of red I had leftover, or the lone hook borrowed from my mum. It taught me to create within my limitations, to truly understand and use what I have.
Now, every object I encounter—a pencil, a skein of yarn, a forgotten hook—feels alive with experience and meaning. The pencil, worn down to an inch, has seen so much. It’s became a symbol of consistency, and sometimes, a feeling of guilt for the changes I made it go through.
I invite you to pause for a moment and consider the objects and materials around you—their stories, their pasts, and the meanings you hold within them. How do they shape your daily life? What do they teach you about patience, presence, and creativity?
Thank you for sharing this space with me, as I unravel thoughts and marks, one stitch and stroke at a time. I look forward to exploring more of these quiet moments and reflections with you next Friday. Until then, may you find wonder in the smallest details and meaning in your own creative journey.
P.S. The images I’ve attached are full of objects that inspire a bit of wonder and curiosity in me. I hope you’ll find moments to shape your own ideas within them, and perhaps discover a spark of meaning or inspiration for your own creative journey.
